PhD scholar, Munir Ashraf, studying in GEMTEX France, has won a Prize for Innovative Textiles.

Ashraf was conferred the prize by Mr. Philippe Taquet, Vice President, French Academy of Science. Twelve researchers of 10 different nationalities studying in different universities of Europe presented their work for this prize.

Munir’s work was declared the best and was awarded a prize of 10,000 euros with a certificate and a shield.

“I developed a multi-functional textile by growing nano rods of ZnO on polyester fabric. This fabric cleans itself like lotus leaves. There is no possibility of its staining by colours dissolved in water but if it gets stained by colorants dissolved in low surface energy solvents like acetone, no need to wash it, just expose the fabric to UV light the colour will disappear automatically due to photocatalytic effect of ZnO.

The fabric has ability to kill the bacteria if attached on the surface and hence it prevents their growth,” says Muneer.

Turkey expels Israeli diplomats after UN report

Posted by Unknown On 11:52 PM No comments

Turkey expelled Israel's ambassador and senior Israeli diplomats and suspended military agreements on Friday, the day after it emerged a U.N. report said Israel had used unreasonable force in a raid on a Gaza-bound ship that killed nine Turks, Reuters reported.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu had said Thursday that Friday's official release of the “Palmer Report” would constitute Israel's last chance to apologize for its raid on the Turkish-sponsored flotilla and warned of consequences, including sanctions, should Israel continue to refuse to apologize.

Stung by Israel's refusal to meet demands for a formal apology, pay compensation for families of the dead, and end the blockade of Palestinians living in the Gaza enclave, Turkey announced it was downgrading ties with Israel further.

"Turkey-Israel diplomatic relations have been reduced to a second secretary level. All personnel above the second secretary level will be sent home by Wednesday at the latest," Foreign Minister Davutoğlu told at a news conference in Ankara.
Davutoğlu announced five measures that the Turkish government would take against Israel:

1. Downgrade diplomatic ties between the two countries to level of second secretary, effectively expelling diplomats above the said level.

2. All military agreements will be put on hold.

3. Turkey will take measures for freedom of maritime movement in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

4. Turkey will no longer recognize the Gaza blockade and will take the issue to the International Court of Justice.

5. Turkey will support all flotilla victims, Turkish and foreign, in court.

Israel's ambassador Gabby Levy was currently in Israel and cancelled plans to return to Turkey on Thursday.

Immediately after the attack on the aid convoy last year, Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel, suspended joint military exercises, and barred Israeli military aircraft from Turkish airspace.

On Friday, Turkey went a step further by putting military pacts with its erstwhile ally on ice.

Over one million students and about 40,000 faculty members will enjoy the facility.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) in collaboration with the Microsoft Pakistan has launched National Student Software Accessibility (NSSA) Portal to provide genuine software availability to the higher education sector. The service will streamline software distribution to all faculty members and students of public sector universities in the country.

All public sector universities recognized by HEC have been provided a customizable Portal for licensed software distribution. The portal consisting of around 150 software applications will enable over one million students and about 40,000 faculty members to download genuine Microsoft software.

The event to mark the launch of the portal was held at HEC Secretariat and was attended by the Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Directors, and representatives from different universities of the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Javaid R. Laghari, Chairperson HEC said that this is a great opportunity for institutions of higher learning to gain access to a broad spectrum of technology and enable the country to move towards a knowledge-based economy, ultimately benefiting the country through socioeconomic development.

“I appreciate Microsoft’s commitment for development of the education sector in Pakistan. It is always fruitful for public sector and private enterprise to combine expertise, knowledge and resources to ensure successful and sustainable education transformation. Microsoft has facilitated HEC to attain its goals by transforming education, fostering local innovation and creating jobs and opportunities through the Strategic Education Alliance,” the Chairperson said.

Mr. Kamal Ahmed, Country General Manager, Microsoft Pakistan said that Microsoft believes that Information and Communications Technology, combined with education, provides the path to individuals, communities and nations to achieve their potential.“NSSA provides support for a comprehensive joint public/private implementation plan that will sustain Pakistan’s objective of achieving education excellence. It is aligned with the key strategic aims of transforming education, fostering local innovation and use of genuine software,” he said.

The portal will further strengthen HEC’s objectives of equipping university students and faculty members with the latest technological access across Pakistan.

Last year Microsoft and HEC entered into the agreement to provide centralized IT services to the universities and degree awarding institutions across Pakistan while maintaining the highest standards in the use of ICT across higher education sector in the country. The alliance consists of Faculty Connection, Microsoft Student Partner Programme, Imagine Cup, Course Lab Integration, Student to Business Interaction (S2B), .NET clubs and MSDN Academic Alliance.

Violence: Sindh government decides not to call army in Karachi

KARACHI – Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Interior Minister Senator Rehman Malik holding law and order meeting at CM House. (Inset) Rehman Malik with Senior Sindh Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza defusing rumours of differences.

    > High-level meeting warns 25 banned organisations to shut their offices and activities; Extortionists and miscreants asked to leave Karachi city immediately and go somewhere else

    >Information minister says centre to take appropriate action if provincial government demands army support; Asks all political parties to show maturity and play positive role in overcoming present crisis

    KARACHI/ISLAMABAD-

The Sindh government expressed confidence in the performance of the police and the paramilitary rangers and decided not to call the army in Karachi, as Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan also said that a political solution was being sought as army actions in the past could not deliver desired results.
A private TV channel reported on Tuesday that a law and order meeting, jointly chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Interior Minister Rehman Malik, was held at the CM House in Karachi. The meeting reviewed the security situation in Karachi and interior Sindh.

Quoting sources, the channel reported that 25 banned organisations were warned to shut their offices and activities and action would be taken against those banned organisations which were operating under different names. Also, a handout of the Sindh government has outlined important steps which will be taken for restoring peace in Karachi.

According to the handout, extortionists and miscreants have been asked to leave the city immediately and go somewhere else otherwise strict action would be taken against them. Buses coming from other provinces to Karachi will also be searched because ammunition is being brought from other provinces to the city.

Talking to journalists after attending meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting in Islamabad, Dr Firdous said that the military operation in Karachi could only be a temporary solution but the government was aiming to find a permanent solution of the issue through political means.

To a question, Dr Firdous said that the Pakistan Army was an important national institution which has always come to the aid of civil administration whenever its help was needed. In war on terror and during last year’s floods, the army has rendered unprecedented services for the nation, she said.

However, the minister said that if the provincial government asks the federal government for the army support, the centre would take appropriate action. She said that unity was need of the hour and all political parties should show maturity and play positive role in overcoming the present crisis in the city.

The minister said that Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) leadership also has to fulfill its responsibilities in this regard. She said that MQM’s concerns about Karachi situation were correct but demanding resignations from the prime minister or chief minister was totally unjustified. She said that the federal government was providing all possible support to the provincial government in fighting miscreants in Karachi.

    Unseen beauty of Pakistan

Posted by Unknown On 11:55 AM 2 comments

In this post I am sharing some amazing photos of Pakistan.

The epic Lake Saiful Muluk. It is located at the northern end of the Kaghan Valley (34°52′37.34″N 73°41′37.71″E) near Naran, Pakistan. The clarity of the water comes from the multiple glaciers all around the high basin which feed the lake.

Village Halmet, Neelum Valley, Pakistan. Neelum Valley is definitely another hidden pearl of Pakistan. No other valley in Kashmir can compare this valley and even most of the Pakistanis know little about it and have little visited there.

Lansdowne Bridge of Rohri, Pakistan. A marvel of nineteenth century engineering, the 'longest "rigid" girder bridge in the world' at that time, was begun in 1887. Designed by Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel, the girder work weighing a massive 3,300 tons was erected by F.E. Robertson, and Hecquet.

Is this Grand Canyon or Texas? No. It's Hingol National Park of Baluchistan, Pakistan. It got Mysterious Mud mountains, beautiful blue water Hingol river, desert and deep blue Arabian sea. 3.5 hrs drive from Karachi on Makran coastal highway

Cold Desert of Skardu in Pakistan. This is one of the most beautiful tourists attraction of Northern areas of Pakistan. There are huge sand plains in Skardu.

Passu Peaks, Hunza, Pakistan. Mysterious mountains stand like a wall between Hunza river and valley.

Uli Biaho Tower, Pakistan. It is a peak near Trango Towers and Baltoro Glacier in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. It consists of two main peaks, Uli Biaho Tower (listed by Roskelley as 19,957 feet, and by Kopold as 6109 m (20,058 feet)); and Uli Biaho Peak (Kopold: 6417 m), which as of 2006 was unclimbed.

Rakaposhi, Pakistan. Rakaposhi is also known as Dumani Mother of Mist

Nanga Parbat, It is the ninth highest mountain on Earth and among the eight-thousanders with a summit elevation of 8,126 meters (26,660 ft). It is also an immense, dramatic peak that rises far above its surrounding terrain.

Karambar Pass marks the boundary between the Chitral and Ishkoman Districts of Pakistan. The Karmabar Lake is almost 3 km long approx and it is 4300 meters above sea level. The flowers of autumns are worth seeing on this lake.

     Deosaid plains – Skardu

     Bara Pani – Deosai

Dudiptsar Lake or Dudipat Lake is a lake encircled by snow clad peaks in Lulusar-DudipatsarNational Park. The lake lies in the extreme north of the Kaghan Valley

Astola Island near Pasni Baluchistan 40 km from shore. Astola is Pakistan’s largest offshore island and the only significant offshore.

Arror Rock, near Rohri in Sindh. The shape of rock was caused by unknown natural forces. There is also a Shrine on the top.

This is an amazing view of a tunnel and bridge over a river on the railway track from "Rohri to Quetta". This track passes through 20 tunnels and over 368 bridges. It's the longest Railway gradient of world, and most scenic Railway ride of Asia.

Headmarala , Sialkot Mountains of Jammu & Kashmir in the background.
